S260 Geology introduction

Course finished October 2004

sedimentary structures image Although I've recently completed an Open University BSc (Hons) degree, I want to continue studying so I've chosen S260 Geology as my first Earth science course. I registered on the 18th January 2004 and I'm looking forward to the home kit of rocks, minerals, and microscope. Everything you need to pass the course seems to be covered in the course material, but I've also ordered three additional books from Amazon to give some background into geology - Teach yourself Geology, The Geology of Britain, and Geoscience. There are no set books required for the course, but we did have to purchase our own copies of 10 mile maps of the UK (solid geology versions). I've also ordered the UK Earth Science Courseware Consortium cdrom, which is available at a special price for students.

The course is structured around four blocks - each block consists of a study book, an activity work book, a large bookmark (that you can take into the exam as long as it isn't annotated), and video and cdrom activities. The course has a website (registered students only) containing .pdf versions of resources such as the block work books, and a copy of the course calendar.

Videos are used to illustrate various types of eruptions, and concepts of structural geology.
